In Progress
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Garage Conversions have gained significant popularity as home additions. However, it’s important to consider the different types of ADUs and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) available, including detached, attached, interior (upper level), interior (lower level), above-garage, garage conversion, and more. Your desired type of ADU will determine the suitable option and the potential long-term costs involved.
The cost range for different ADU types in San Diego is area $200 to $500 per sqft. The cost of constructing a 500 sqft ADU typically ranges from $100,000 to $250,000 and so on.

Here are examples illustrating the allowable sizes for ADUs based on the square footage of the existing single-family residence (SFD):
Square Footage of Existing SFD: 1,800 sq. ft.
- Maximum Allowed Square Footage for Detached ADU: 1,200 sq. ft.
